The name Toongabbie was given by the Dharuk Aboriginal language group and translated to mean either’meeting of the waters’ or ‘land near water. It may have been named after John King, an Australian-born Pastoralist and Parliamentarian, who managed the ‘Rosedale’ run during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in NSW.

The national peak body for chicken farmers has attempted to allay concerns about a proposed broiler farm at Toongabbie in south-east Victoria. If built, the facility would house 800,000 chickens at any one time and produce four million birds annually.

Fully fenced and gated

Crown Toongabbie is a fully enclosed and gated greyhound facility situated in Toongabbie’s heart. As the first facility of its kind to offer comprehensive care for greyhound rearing, whelping, education and adoption at the highest animal welfare standards, Crown Toongabbie sets itself apart.

Sandown Greyhound Racing Club built this facility on 125 acres (23km) outside Traralgon to give greyhounds the best environment possible throughout their lifespan. Receiving proper care at the right time is essential for keeping a dog contented and healthy.

Toongabbie is a peaceful town that boasts numerous community and sporting groups, as well as affordable properties, V/line bus/train connections and one of the towns on the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail. Toongabbie is a densely-populated suburb, but through bushland regeneration and pollution control initiatives the area’s vegetation has been greatly improved. The main waterway running through Toongabbie is Greystanes or Girraween Creek which traverses the northern half of the suburb and often floods during heavy downpours.
